What is Diamond Beach?

“Diamond Beach” is the informal name for the stretch of Breiðamerkursandur opposite Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Icebergs from the lagoon float through a short channel into the Atlantic, and ocean swell washes some back up onto the black volcanic sand. The contrast between black sand and clear ice gives the place its name.

Why visit?

  • Wildly photogenic, in almost any light.
  • Free, no booking, year-round.
  • Lets you see glacier ice up close without a guided tour.
  • Paired with Jökulsárlón makes a substantial 1.5–2 hour stop on the Ring Road.

How to get there

Same exit as Jökulsárlón. The Jökulsárlón parking lots serve both shores — cross the Ring Road carefully.

Safety

The single biggest risk here is sneaker waves. They catch visitors every year.

  • Never turn your back to the sea.
  • Never stand on stranded ice — waves can submerge it and you in seconds.
  • Watch children closely.

Best time to visit

Mornings tend to have more bergs (calm overnight conditions). The crowds peak from 10:30 to 15:30 in summer; off-peak is much quieter. In winter, the low sun creates strong shadows and translucent ice — but expect serious wind.

Frequently asked questions

How is Diamond Beach different from Jökulsárlón?

They sit across the Ring Road from each other and are usually visited together. Jökulsárlón is the lagoon side, where icebergs sit on water. Diamond Beach is the ocean side, where the same icebergs wash up on black sand.

Are there always diamonds on the beach?

Not always. The amount of ice depends on the wind, tides and current. Mornings after a calm night usually have more bergs. Some days there are none.

Is it safe to walk on the beach?

Yes, but stay alert. Sneaker waves catch tourists every year. Never turn your back to the ocean, and don't stand on stranded ice slabs.

Can you visit Diamond Beach in winter?

Yes. It's on the Ring Road and accessible whenever Route 1 is open. Check road.is before driving in winter.
