What is Skaftafell?
Skaftafell is a former independent national park that’s now part of Vatnajökull National Park, Europe’s largest. The visitor area sits at the foot of Skaftafellsheiði, with a ranger station, café and a network of marked trails that climb gently into the hills with views over the glacier tongue Skaftafellsjökull.
Why visit?
- Svartifoss — the basalt-column waterfall, 45-min walk from the visitor centre.
- Skaftafellsjökull viewpoint — easy 1.5 km out-and-back to the glacier edge.
- Glacier hikes and ice cave tours leave from here year-round.
- A real bathroom and a café in the middle of the longest leg of the South Coast.
Suggested routes
- Short (1 h): Visitor centre → Skaftafellsjökull viewpoint → back.
- Medium (2.5 h): Visitor centre → Svartifoss → Sjónarsker viewpoint → back.
- Long (5–6 h): Skaftafellsheiði loop with Kristínartindar summit (steep).
Safety
- Trails are icy in winter; consider micro-spikes from October to April.
- Do not walk onto the glacier without a guide — crevasses can be hidden.
- Always tell someone your plan for long hikes, or file an itinerary with SafeTravel.
