What is the weather and daylight like in August?

August keeps July’s warmth but starts handing back the daylight. Highs stay around 13°C, lows around 8°C — still summer-mild, with the sea-influenced air keeping nights cool. It’s a touch wetter than July on average, but conditions are broadly stable.

Daylight is the big shift. The month opens with about 19 hours of usable light and closes nearer 15, losing roughly six minutes a day. By late August there’s a genuine few hours of darkness around midnight — and that changes what’s possible at night.

What is open in Iceland in August?

Still effectively everything, with one ending.

  • Highland F-roads remain fully open, and most stay open through mid-September. Late-August rain can raise river levels on routes like F208 and Askja, so check road.is and SafeTravel before crossing — but access is rarely a problem this month.
  • Puffins are present only until about mid-August, then they leave the colonies for the open ocean. Early August still works; see where to see puffins.
  • Whale watching, glacier hikes and boat tours all run at full summer capacity.

What should you actually do in August?

  • Catch the returning aurora. From roughly the third week of August, clear nights get dark enough (around 22:00) to see the northern lights again — the first chance since spring, and often a quiet one before the autumn crowds.
  • Do the Highlands while they’re open. Landmannalaugar and Þórsmörk are still fully accessible, and the late-summer light is superb. You still need a 4×4 and river-crossing competence.
  • Verslunarmannahelgi (first weekend of August). The August Bank Holiday is Iceland’s biggest domestic travel weekend — the Þjóðhátíð festival in Vestmannaeyjar, campsites full nationwide. Expect busy roads and book accommodation early if you’re travelling then.

What should you avoid in August?

  • Don’t expect reliable aurora before mid-August. Early-month nights are still too bright. Aurora becomes a real prospect only in the last week or so — don’t build an early-August trip around it.
  • Don’t bank on puffins late in the month. They’re gone by roughly mid-August. A late-August or September puffin trip will miss them.
  • Don’t underestimate how fast the light drops. Late-August evenings get dark far quicker than early-August ones — plan your driving and last stops with the shortening days in mind.

How busy and expensive is August?

Still high. August holds near peak prices and crowds, especially in the first half and over Verslunarmannahelgi. The back end of the month is the sweet spot: crowds and rates begin to ease, you keep summer-open roads, and you gain the first aurora nights — arguably the best value-to-experience window of the high season. Booking is still essential; leave hotels and car hire to the last minute and you’ll pay peak rates.

Frequently asked questions

Can you see the aurora in August?

Late August yes — once nights are dark enough (around 22:00 by month-end). Early August is still too bright.

Is August too late for the Highlands?

No. F-roads remain open through mid-September in most years.

Are puffins still in Iceland in August?

Only in the first half. Puffins leave the colonies for the open ocean around mid-August once the chicks fledge, so early August still works but late August is too late. Check our puffin guide for the colony list.
